Key Scriptures

A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 NKJV

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4 NIV

Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry. James 1:19 CEB

Will two people walk together unless they have agreed to do so? Amos 3:3 CEB

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • PC pointed out that “listening” is one way we can show someone that we are interested in them. How do you feel when someone is not listening to you?
  • When you’re with friends, do you tend to be a listener or a talker?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • Which part of the message was most impactful for you and why?
  • How are some ways we can show someone we are being an “active” listener?
  • Have you been around someone that dominates the conversation talking about themselves? How does it make you feel?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • Who do you go to when you need someone to talk to?
  • Everyone wants to be encouraged and built up, Who has been an encourager in your life?
  • It is said that the first 7 seconds people will have a solid impression of who you are. What can you do to make a good first impression?
  • Why are first impressions so important?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

Father, help me be a good listener, to show genuine interest in other people. Give me words that build up others and encourage others. I pray others will see Jesus in me. In Your’ name I pray, amen.

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • This week I’m going to be more of a listener than talker.
  • I will find someone to speak an encouraging word to.
  • I’m going to make it a point to smile more this week.
