The People Wanted a King

Legacy

We see in the bible that God’s people rejected Him as their king and demanded a human king like the surrounding nations. God granted the request of His people, giving them over to their disobedience. Let us learn from God's people the mistakes in putting our hope in a man, and let us focus on the true king we need, King Jesus.

Introduction

What will be your legacy? This week Pastor Marc discusses legacy, what will we, as a generation pass on to the next to the next generation? Proverbs 13:22 says “a good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.”

Discussion Questions

(The goal is to grow in our relationship with Christ and each other. It is ok if you don’t cover every question.)

1. Share about a time when your plans backfired on you. Why don’t things always go according to plan for us?

2. How have your own shortcomings contributed to your plans failing?

3. Have a volunteer read Genesis 3:1-5. In verse 1, what did the serpent try to get Eve to question? What did God actually say (see Gen.2:16-17) to Adam and Eve? How is that different from what the serpent said? How did Jesus face temptation from the devil perfectly, where Adam and Eve failed (see Matthew 4)?

4. What did the serpent say about God’s command in verses 4 and 5? What did he imply about God’s character? What did he imply about God’s motives?

5. Has there ever been a time in your life when you viewed God’s prohibition of something as unfair, but later came to understand that He was protecting you for your good? Explain.

6. How can we encourage one another this week in our battle against sin and in remembering our true identity in Christ?

Moving Forward

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

Change Your Mind

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Ephesians 4:14 NIV

Prayer

Thank God for taking the initiative and sending Jesus to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. Thank Him for His sacrifice on the cross by which we may be forgiven and reconciled to God. Ask Him to help us trust in the power of the cross, both for salvation and the strength in our daily battle against sin. Pray that you will recognize sin for what it is, and desire Jesus all the more.
