Parables

Mercy

When Jesus addressed a crowd, he ALWAYS spoke in stories and illustrations. Why is that? He knew that stories are like velcro to our minds. With just a few words he communicated such large truths. So, come take a look at his Parables!

Introduction

This week Pastor Craig tells us about mercy and forgiveness. How often do we forgive? The issue with us is mercy and pity. In the parable from Matthew 18, Jesus tells us, "Don't let your mercy run out." How often? Never, don't let your mercy run out. Mercy is easier to extend when we remember what we have been forgiven of, and how often we have been forgiven. Mercy does not depend on the action of others.

Discussion Questions

1. When you think about forgiveness, is there a particular person who comes to mind? Why that person?

2. What kinds of things hold us back from truly receiving and giving forgiveness?

3.  Ask a volunteer to read Matthew 18:21-35. What do you think Peter expected Jesus to say when he asked if someone should forgive a brother seven times?

4. What did Jesus’ answer reveal about Peter’s motives in asking?

5. Have you ever been in a situation where you felt that forgiving someone might be the same as enabling them? If so, share. How do you think Jesus would handle that situation?

6. When is the last time you felt in awe of the forgiveness God has shown? How can you make that a regular part of your life?

7. What is one practical way our group can show God’s grace to our community?

Moving Forward

Where do you need to show mercy? It is easier to do when you remember how much you have been forgiven. Easier to do when you remember the story of Zacchaeus and the unforgiven servant.

Changing Your Mind

Be free today! “There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.” James 2:13 NLT

Prayer

Close in prayer. Ask God to open your eyes to beauty of His forgiveness again. Thank God that at the right time, Christ came to bring forgiveness. Pray that God would help your group become like Him as you forgive others.
