The People Wanted a King

Seeking God's Wisdom

We see in the bible that God’s people rejected Him as their king and demanded a human king like the surrounding nations. God granted the request of His people, giving them over to their disobedience. Let us learn from God's people the mistakes in putting our hope in a man, and let us focus on the true king we need, King Jesus.

Introduction

God’s people rejected Him as king and demanded a human king like the surrounding nations. In a world where we always can find people to affirm our wrong opinions, we need people in our lives who are committed to helping us know and follow God’s Word.

Discussion Questions

(The goal is to grow in our relationship with Christ and each other. It is ok if you don’t cover every question.)

1. When facing a difficult decision in life, are you more likely to ask for input from someone who will agree with your thoughts or someone who might challenge you? Why?

2. As followers of Christ, why is it important to be able to receive insight that challenges our natural thoughts and tendencies?

3.  Have a volunteer read 1 Kings 22:1-14. What can you infer about Jehoshaphat from his response in verses 4-5? What does his question in verse 7 tell you about the prophets from whom Ahab asked advice?

4. How did Micaiah respond to the pressure put on him to agree with the prophets of Ahab?

5. Have a volunteer read 1 Kings 22:15-28 - In your own words, what did God say would happen if Ahab went to war against Ramoth Gilead?

6. Deep down, why do you think Ahab was so angry with Micaiah?

7.  Do you have someone like Micaiah in your life who will speak truth to you even when everyone else is saying something different? Why is it important that we are careful to tell each other what the Lord says (v. 14)?

Moving Forward

When you push forward in your plans and reject what you know God is telling you. You have to face what may come. We need to learn from those mistakes. We need to learn that its always going to be easier God's way. Sometimes your fate could be like Ahab, and you may not get a do-over.

Change Your Mind

We need people like Micaiah in our lives who will speak truth to us even when everyone else is saying something different. It important that we are careful to tell each other what the Lord says: 1 Kings 22:14 “But Micaiah said, ‘As the Lord lives, what the Lord says to me, that I will speak.’” We must be quick to tell others the truth: and the only truth is Jesus.

Prayer

Thank God for His Word that stands true even when it is in opposition to what you want or have planned. Ask Him to help you always seek counsel from His Word and His people and to follow it even when doing so is difficult.
