Parables

The Great Banquet

When Jesus addressed a crowd, he ALWAYS spoke in stories and illustrations. Why is that? He knew that stories are like velcro to our minds. With just a few words he communicated such large truths. So, come take a look at his Parables!

Introduction

This week Pastor Craig discusses with us the parable of The Great Banquet. Jesus told the parable of the great banquet to underscore the reality of God’s gracious invitation and to cause us to consider how we have actually responded to His call.

Discussion Questions

1.  If you could go any place in the world for dinner, where would you like to be invited (i.e., The White House, A celebrity’s house, Buckingham Palace, a private island, etc.)?

2. If you could invite anyone in the world to go with you to a banquet, who would you invite?

3. Have a volunteer ready Luke 14:15-24 - What character in this story do you identify with the most: those who excused themselves, the man who prepared the banquet, the outcast who was grateful to be invited to the banquet, or the outcast who didn’t even get invited until the second round? Explain.

4. Jesus was having dinner with a group of Pharisees when He told this parable. Who do the characters in this parable represent: the host? the guests who refused the invitation? the poor, crippled, blind, and lame?

5. Does the banquet Jesus is talking about only come when we get to heaven, or is there a sense in which God makes present life into a banquet as well?

6. How would you describe your Christian life right now, in terms of a banquet: enjoying the hors d’oeuvres; eating leftovers; didn’t know there was one; helping in the kitchen; other?

7.  How can this group help you get rid of the excuses that come between you and God? Is there a way that you would like the group to hold you accountable?

Moving Forward

We need another Great Awakening in America. The captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? ”Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.” Joel 1:6

Changing Your Mind

Let Christ shine on you. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them…for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5:11,14 ESV

Prayer

Thank God for His gift of salvation that extends to all people. Thank Him for drawing you to Himself and helping you overcome any excuses you offer for avoiding Him and His kingdom. Ask Him to help you be motivated to share His gospel of grace with the people in your life who don’t know Him.
