The Venom of Fear

Like many of nature’s creatures that use poisonous venom to paralyze their prey, fear’s venom disables it, victims. What is the essence of fear? How can we move past its effects? And what is the antidote?

Introduction

This week Pastor Craig discusses the venom of fear – Paralysis. In the story of David and Goliath we often miss the key part that King Saul plays. This could have been Saul’s story. He was the king. He was the one who should have stepped forward and defeated Goliath. But instead of conquering by faith, Saul was paralyzed by fear. As a result, he lost out on being part of one of the greatest stories of all time.

Discussion Questions

(The goal is to grow in our relationship with Christ and each other. It is ok if you don’t cover every question.)

1.  Which circumstance in your life has caused the most fear?

2.  When you are confronted with a seemingly unwinnable situation, is your natural reaction one of fight, or flight?

3.  Have a volunteer read 1 Samuel 17: 8-11. What is most intimidating to you about the way Goliath is described in these verses? How did the Israelites, including Saul their king, react when they saw Goliath?

4. Have another volunteer read I Samuel 17:26-27. What question did David ask aloud in verse 26? How is his response to Goliath’s message different than the response of the soldiers?

5. Why is it important that David described the army of Saul as belonging to “the living God”? Do you think David said this aloud to not only remind the soldiers, but also himself?

6. How can our group help you face a “giant” in your life today?

7. What past experiences of God’s faithfulness do you need to remind yourself of when facing your next Goliath?

Moving Forward

Don’t be paralyzed with fear! How do you get past your fears?  Pastor Craig told us about three important truths. 1) Remember the benefits of following God. 2) Be zealous for God’s honor. 3)Don’t let others discourage you from following God.

Changing Your Mind

When the Israelites saw Goliath, they all ran away. But God tells us to stand.

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”  Ephesians 6:13

Prayer

Spend some time praying for those in your group who are facing giants. Life is tough and we’re all hurting. Devote the last few minutes of class to praying for courage to faithfully walk with God in the midst of struggle.
